It's been a hard year- as it always is for independent wine merchants, but again high-street shops have proved their worth in terms of championing lesser countries, regions and grape varieties.
Upcoming regions such as Croatia and Slovenia (two countries to watch for whites in 2012) wouldn't be able to make headway if it weren't for the independents.
I loved the aromatic, musky Bolfan Libertin Pinot Sivi 2010 (aka pinot gris; £11.10, from jascots.co.uk; 13% abv), a drier style than you typically find in Alsace and a wine that would be great with mildly spiced Thai and other Asian salads.
