About En Primeur
Jascots Wine Merchants has strong, direct relationships with the most long-established négociants in Bordeaux, placing us in an ideal position to secure allocations of many of the world's most desirable wines before they are on the open market.
Buying en primeur involves buying wines before they have been released - before they are even bottled in most cases - and taking delivery up to two years later when the wines are collected from the Chateaux.
There are three stages to buying En Primeur, firstly, you buy the wine as and when the Châteaux release over the 2 months or so of the campaign and invoices are payable immediately. The invoices are for the cost of the wine under bond (tax free) in London....theoretically, it is unlikely that they will ever be available again at lower prices than those first offered .
At stage two, the Classed Growths will be shipped in bottle or Magnum when they are physically released by the Château in the Spring and early summer 3 years after the vintage and will be delivered into our bonded warehouse. You will then be charged storage and insurance at the prevailing rate until such time as you want to take delivery.
Thirdly, to take delivery and finally hold the bottles in your hands, you will need to pay the duty on each case and VAT on the original cost of your wine, storage, insurance and, believe it or not, on the duty as well!
It's not a very complicated process, nor is En Primeur the preserve of the rich and famous, but, a method of buying Claret relatively cheaply for enjoying in the years to come - open to all comers!
How does the campaign work?
If you are a knowledgeable investor and seasoned En Primeur buyer, you may want to receive the hour-by-hour emails and updates that we send out.
If you follow certain Châteaux from vintage to vintage, please do let us have your 'wish list' and we will do our best to get hold of allocations of your favourite wines, letting you know their prices immediately they are released so that you can decide whether or not you want to buy them an immediate decision is imperative!
Thirdly, if you would like to invest some money but are happy to leave the selection of the wines to us, please do let us know the level of investment that you would like to make and the number of cases that you would like to buy and we will do our very best to fulfill your requirement based upon our findings at the UGC tastings....that is if we feel that the opening prices are fair and reasonable given the market and the rate of exchange. If they are worth us buying, they will be worth you buying!
