Hannah is Off to NZ for a Month with The Esk Valley Wine Estate in Hawkes Bay
By Hannah Gordon. Less than one week to go and I will start my New Zealand harvest adventure at Esk Valley Wine Estate in Hawkes Bay. My wonderful...
Meet the people behind the wines, probably the best team in the world...
The Director Team
After school, a spell at one of the popular high street wine shops was followed by the vendange in Margaux in the illustrious 1982 vintage. Returning to London, I ran a boutique wine shop for 18 months before my big career break in 1985 when I joined a proper Wine Merchant in The City. In 1990, I set up Jascots Wine Merchants and here I am 20 years later with a fabulous team of dedicated individuals more or less doing the same thing, finding great wines at fair prices and providing them with an emphasis on first class service.

John joined Jascots in the summer of 2010. He has brought focus to our business via detailed analysis, strategic planning and determined execution. His experience of both the public and private sectors at boardroom and department of state level has added real value. John's product knowledge is 'developing' but he is very enthusiastic. It was working the Languedoc vendage of 1998 and seeing how that and subsequent vintages developed, that his real interest in wine was aroused. John holds an MA from the Faculty of Military Science and Management, Cranfield University. He is proud to be working alongside such a talented team of directors and staff at Jascots.

Miles got his first wine job at Unwins' Hammersmith branch the day after leaving school. Spells at Threshers, Bottoms Up and J&B followed whilst at Uni in Bristol. After graduating, a short time (a week and a half) was spent considering 'sensible' careers before joining Jascots and finding the hard-working and energetic environment he was looking for. A salesman for three years Miles was appointed Key Accounts Director in June 2010. His outstanding management skills and sales technique led to his promotion to Sales Director in April 2011. Miles is undoubtably one of the finest wine salespeople of his generation.

After graduating from University College, London, David was drawn unerringly into the wine trade, starting in the Wine Department at Fortnum & Mason. He then joined Berry Bros & Rudd, cutting his teeth as a buyer, and passed the Master of Wine exam in 1999. Further honing his skills at a couple of quality wine merchants, he then joined the Jascots team as Director of Purchasing, PR and Marketing in 2009.

Dean joined Jascots after a long and distinguished career in the Grenadier Guards. His experience as Regimental Sergeant Major at Sandhurst has been invaluable to the management and direction of our logistics department. Appointed director in 2008, Dean has helped to guide the company in the direction required in order to ensure that timely and accurate service is provided to all Jascots' customers. Dean and his department form the backbone of the Company - their default setting is to say YES to any request.

A career in the Restaurant world was promptly shelved when Ben visited the famous Vergelegen wine estate in South Africa's Western Cape. He found himself a job as dog's body and eventually promotion to assistant wine maker. Back home Ben enjoyed great success at Corney & Barrow running the fine wine shop, and then the European Broking Desk but when offered a position at Jascots in 2000 Ben jumped at the chance. He became a Director in 2007 and is 'World Famous' for his electrically energetic Corporate Wine Challenges.

Dominique is our wine devoted Alsatian attaché in residence. Friendly, customer loving and softly commercial, Dominique's previous experiences add real value to his clients' wine business. Prior to joining Jascots he was a senior sales manager at Amathus, managed two wine shops in London for Nicolas UK and worked for Sotherby's in Vienna and Paris. He has broadened our reach within London to the east, and for anyone who has yet to meet him, you will soon understand why he inspires intense loyalty from his customer base.

Will has always had a passion for wine with both parents in the trade. Having passed his Advanced WSET Certificate with distinction, his career started 3 years ago in Western Australia's Margaret River Region working hard and learning the skills of viticulture and winemaking. He returned to England in summer 2010 and joined Jascots within a week of touching down at Heathrow. Will was Jack's ADC for 9 months before being 'released to market'. In May 2011 he was made a London Sales Executive and now is one of Jascots' most exciting young salesmen.

It was whilst managing a wine bar that Tom (sometimes known as Bert) fell in love with wine. In order to scratch his itch he decided to be a sommelier. He studied hard, developed his wine knowledge and service skills, and landed a plumb job as sommelier with Harvey Nichols at the Oxo Tower, soon receiving accolades as their top performer. He was then head hunted by D&D London as the top sommelier at the Plateau Restaurant. Once again, No1 selling sommelier, Tom realized he had developed 2 passions; wine and selling wine - time for another move. Luck would have it, he landed a real premium opportunity; Tom joined Jascots in June 2011. We are so happy that Tom is with the team - a first rate addition there is no doubt.

After Tileri had spent time working under a Master of Wine in the Cotswolds, she headed out to Australia to further her knowledge in the processes of growing, picking and the production of wine. She got hands-on experience in the vineyards of South Australia, as well as wineries in the Yarra Valley in Victoria. Now, after two years running an art gallery - where her duties as Gallery Manager included organising wine tastings and selecting the wines for clients at Private Views, she has enthusiastically embraced the opportunity to work once more with wine, which is her main passion. Full of personality, dedication and drive, this new addition to Jascots is one you want to watch.

James made the move to Jascots from Marks and Spencer's Head Office wine training & stores team in 2007. He is now our senior sales account manager and our food and wine matching guru. After his latest course at Leith's School of Food & Wine and between his WSET studies, he is now directly supporting our clients with advice in menu and wine list construction, building ever closer relationships and generally making their lives just that bit easier. James is a gifted speaker and a regular host of wine challenges, food and wine dinners and food and wine matching workshops.

After completing a law degree in his home country of Chile, Raul decided to travel the world. He served as a sommelier in one of the best Hotels in Buenos Aires and sailed the globe for five years with Cunard gaining his WSET qualifications and was privileged to meet many of the worlds' illustrious winemakers. Since settling in the UK, he has been sommelier in Michelin starred restaurants working alongside the greats including Michel Roux Jr. and Gary Rhodes. Raul has now changed tack slightly, joining Jascots as our Head Sommelier where he leads the development and delivery of our Customer Training. He does a number of things well, but his front of house and service training is absolutely brilliant. If your team needs training - Raul is your man.

Ben Jones has joined our team! Ben is a huge lover of wine, great raconteur and a TV star. His works include Keen Eddie, Longitude, Holby City, Emmerdale, Spooks and the hit comedies; My Family and Moving Wallpaper. Ben also played regular character Dr Greg Robinson in Doctors and appeared in over 630 episodes. He was nominated several times at the British Soap Awards for "sexiest male" which he never won and he doesn't like to talk about it. We are so lucky that Ben now also hosts Jascots International Wine Challenges when he is free and he is amazing - book now to avoid disappointment.

After a career spanning 12 years in the restaurant trade, including running a restaurant for Jean-Christophe Novelli, Alun changed direction to follow his true love, wine! Four years spent learning the ropes at Majestic honed his skills in customer services, and since joining Jascots in September 2010, Alun has progressed to now head up our award winning Customer Services department and is one of the most familiar voices to our customers.

During 11 years in the media trade, Rob was forever realising his love for wine. Whilst drinking it on far too regular an occasion he also spent his holidays sampling in many vineyards across France. Finally in 2010 he took the plunge and joined Majestic, learning the ropes and developing his knowledge whilst acknowledging that wine was his future. Eventually joining us in March 2011, Rob now works closely alongside our Chairman as his aide-de-camp, making them a happy and effective team.

Hannah's first contact with the world of wines was during her 3 years apprenticeship with a renowned hotel chain in Germany. After that she enjoyed her student life at the University of Applied Sciences Stralsund in Germany while studying for her Management Degree. Her interest in wine tourism grew within this time and she spent 1 ½ years living in South Africa and working on a Wine Estate in Paarl where she also conducted her dissertation on wine tourism. Aiming at finding her roots in the English Wine Industry, Hannah is now part of our customer service & sales support team.

Alastair's career started in the restaurant trade where many expensive and exciting cellars first sparked his passion for wine. After taking time out to travel in South-East Africa he spent three years with Majestic Wine, gaining the WSET Diploma in the process. He then left the UK and headed down under to spend a year visiting the wineries of South Australia and worked the recent (and extremely wet!) 2011 vintage with Kilikanoon Wines of The Clare Valley. After a long, hard vintage he returned home to the UK and is proud to be part of the fantastic team at Jascots.

Elenor's first contact with the wine trade started with the University of Edinburgh Wine Society of which she was an avid member. Within the society she was both President and Captain of the Blind Tasting Team; winning top taster in the annual Edinburgh vs. St Andrews blind tasting match sponsored by Pol Roger. Whilst completing her last two years of university, Elenor worked part-time for Cambridge Wine Merchants, and completed her WSET Advanced. Upon graduating Elenor was drawn to Jascots after being impressed by the teams enthusiasm and knowledge; she is now part of the customer services and sales support team!

Lured by the offer of free wine, Mat did a course on 'The Historical Geography of Viticulture' as part of his degree. A throwaway job offer by one of the guest speakers, Tony Laithwaite, led to a spell at Direct Wines on graduating. After honing his product knowledge at Oddbins, Mat moved on to the sales desk at Les Caves de Pyrene, before packing it all in to go travelling. Thinking he was just playing hard ball, Les Caves de Pyrene promoted him to Purchasing Manager on his return to the UK. After three years there, Mat abandoned wine and did a five year stint as a supply chain specialist for an American Biotechnology firm; the appeal of drinking at work proved too much to resist though, and he joined Jascots in September.

Three years in the pub trade followed by five years as wine retail shop manager saw Dave's passion for good ale and fine wine blossom; and it has never diminished. A change of direction led to 22 years in warehousing as a manager in London distribution centers for the two biggest players in their fields. Dave is also an NVQ Assessor and Internal Verifier having a strong belief in staff development. When the opportunity to work with wines in a forward moving company presented itself it was a no brainer - Dave joined Jascots.
