La Monacesca
The name ?Monacesca? comes from the installation, around 900 A.D., of a little group of Benedictine monks, who fled from Longobard persecutions. Arriving from the north of Italy, they built a church and a monastery, or Monacesca.The estate was founded by Casimiro Cifola in 1966. He planted the first Verdicchio vines and then built a winery next to the vineyard for the fermentation and bottling. The first production that was bottled and marketed was in 1973.Fattoria la Monacesca is situated in the commune of Matelica, about 4 km from the town centre of Contrada Monacesca. The whole estate covers 85 hectares, of which 27 hectares are devoted to vine growing.In 1982 the estate reached its current size and was planted with Verdicchio, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The red varieties of Sangiovese and Merlot were planted in 1994.
