Domaine Montrose

The name Montrose refers to its geographic location on a volcano (Mont) and to the pink (Rose) flowered almond trees surrounding the vineyard. The Domaine was founded in 1701 when the owner's (Bernard Coste) ancestor received its coat of arms from King Louis XIV's counsellor. Since 1701 Montrose has remained family owned, today Bernard Coste is the 11th generation in charge of the Domaine with his son Olivier joining him in 2009. Domaine Montrose is an 85 hectare estate and managed with passion; right from the vineyard manager to the winemaker, where everybody is driven by the same objective - Crafting great South of France wines. To achieve their goal they are practising and encouraging sustainable farming, not only does it protect their environment but it also gives the wine a better expression of the terroir. The red grapes are planted on villa franchiens (small pebbles) and basaltics soils with low water reserves forcing the roots to go deep, giving good concentration and balance to the wines. The rosés are harvested earlier to preserve freshness and fruitiness. White grapes are planted on chalky clay marls to develop fruitiness and delicacy. Some Chardonnays are planted on basaltic soils to add more minerality the wines. During the harvest, they pick their grapes at night to preserve aromas away from the Sun's oxidation and also to keep them cool. Once in the cellar, the must (fermenting grape juice) and then the wines are kept in thermo-regulated vats to protect them. This great care allows enables them to use much less of the other protective techniques, such as sulphites. Therefore their wines contain less sulphites than the legal limit authorised with organic farming.
