Galicia

Situated in the north-west of the country and separated by mountains from Castilla y Leon, Galicia has developed in isolation to the rest of Spain and is culturally closer to Northern Portugal than Madrid. It is one of the wetter parts of the Iberian peninsula, but this is more than compensated for by the annual average of over 2,000 hours of sunshine, much of this during the growing season. With wines produced using local, native grape varieties and modern wine-making techniques, the region is currently enjoying a renaissance. Rias Baixas, famous for its prized white wines from the Albarino grape, has been responsible for much of the resurgence in the area.
