Neszmély, Western Hungary
The region of the Gerecse Hills around Neszmély (in Western Transdanubia), just 75 kilometres from Budapest, is one of Hungary's traditional wine growing regions and is frequently referred to as the 'New Zealand of Europe' because of the similar climate and the resulting pure quality of its white wines. Climatic conditions favour the production of fragrant and elegant white wines with zippy acidity such as Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc and local specialities such as Irsai Oliver. The climate is heavily influenced by major geographical features including Lake Balaton and the River Danube itself, and a mixture of volcanic and slate enriched soils lends the wines a delicious, clean mineral feel.
