Triomphe

Triomphe is a black, hybrid grape variety from Alsace used in the production of a few English red wines. It is a crossing of Knipperle (a unique crossing of Pinot Noir and Gouais Blanc) and an unknown American vine.It was created by the grape breeder Eugène Kuhlmann at the start of the 20th Century in Alsace, when it was still Germany but only released after the 1st World War. Triomphe is known as a German-French origin but it is only now found in England and the Netherlands.Triomphe consists of many small bunches with a good yield. The vine grows quickly and vigorously with the grapes having low acid and high sugars, but it can have a high risk of rot and mildew. It produces deeply coloured wines that have a slight earthy and savoury flavour.
