Touriga Nacional
Touriga Nacional is a black grape which is considered to be Portugal’s finest. It is planted throughout the countries northern wine regions and is a key grape of both dry red wines and Port. It has been said that Touriga Nacional is Portugal’s answer to Cabernet Sauvignon in France. Both show bold dark fruit flavours with a hint of spice and leather and juicy tannins that has great aging potential. It is usually used in a blend but really come into its own. In Douro this grape variety is very important in the production of port but it only is a small percentage of the grape grown in the area. As after phylloxera devastated vineyards in the area they were replanted with more-productive varieties as Touriga Nacional has low yields.
