Cahors
Straddling the River Lot Cahors is by far the most famous of all Southwest France’s wine regions. Cahors is a small town located 100 miles east of Bordeaux. It is known for inky, fascinating red wines made from Malbec (Côt). These inky “black wines” have long had their champions. Favoured by King Henry II and Pope John XXII these wines exhibit flavours of tobacco, plums, prunes and are generally tighter and leaner than the opulent style of Malbec from Mendoza. The Climate in Cahors is influenced by both the Atlantic and the Mediterranean and is gently warmed by a southerly breeze prolonging the sunny, dry autumn. The dry climate also encourages the vines to develop deep strong rooms which further adds complexity and concentration to the grapes allowing for wines that can improve with some bottle age.
