All About The Portable Picnic Wines

01.06.20

Chloe Brown

Is that hastily bought office fan not doing the job? Mine either. It’s gotten hot lately and the government has decreed we can safely head to a park and see a friend, or perch on your porch with a fellow outside enthusiast the recommended distance away. What better way to shoot the breeze and talk through this momentous time, than to have a wee tipple outside with some of our most convenient of drops!

Screw Caps

A screw cap can maybe seem like you’re cheating, it’s almost too easy! But to think the wine inside is any less delicious is completely false. Corks are often valued over their ‘breathability’, meaning the wine can change (for better or worse!) over its lifetime. However modern screw caps now come with calculated levels of ‘oxygen ingress’ resulting in some winemakers choosing these for their reliability. We could talk through the pros and cons till the cows come home, but the best part about wines under screw cap is the ease with which they can be resealed and taken away. However hard you push that cork back in, sod’s law it’s still going to end up lining the inside of that brand new tote! Good thing we’ve got a warehouse full of delicious ones to get you through those isolation blues.

Paving the way for portable sustainable wine are our great friends over at Three Choirs Winery. While they’re not certified organic, the winery is dedicated to doing its bit for the planet. Amongst many other things, minimal pesticides are used, rainwater is recycled for irrigation and trees are planted amongst the vines to encourage bats and birds to combat pesky insects. Carbon emissions are low not only because of the short distance from the vine to your glass, but also due to the painstaking work done by hand in the vineyard. Last year we worked with winemaker Martin to launch the world’s first English wine in a can.

Canned Wines

Canned wines are becoming more and more popular for good reason, not only does the transportation use lower Carbon emissions, but they also fit in your pocket! As aluminium weighs less than glass our vans produce less Carbon per Litre of wine delivered (which FYI, is our sustainability pledge!). Not only are they great for reducing single-use plastic, but they can be recycled and become a new can within 8 weeks. On top of all this, they’re quite delicious and ready to be drunk in a park now!
We’ve packed up our Picnic Basket Case full of a selection of our wonderful screw top bottles, and 2 of each Three Choirs can ready for you to enjoy. Grab your hamper and a pack of scotch eggs and you’re ready to go!
