Château Taillefer
As you enter Pomerol from the west Château Taillefer is the first major estate you will see. It is one of the oldest estates in Pomerol going back to at least 1785. The château its self was built in the early 1800’s. In the 1920’s the Moueix family bought the property and took over the production and to this day it is still owned by them, now a dynasty. When the family purchased the land it was not known that it had some of the best terrior in Pomerol situated in it, they bought it for the easy of transport as it is close to the business centre of Libourne.The estate comprises of 11.5 hectare on the Right Bank which is planted mainly with Merlot and a small amount of Cabernet France that is slowly being replaced with Merlot, but slowly so the average age of the vines remain around 30 years old. Taillefer comes from the verb to cut iron, which is in reference in to the iron deposits in the sand and gravel soil. On average around 4,000 cases a year are produced of Château Taillefer, there is also a second wine called Château Fontmarty.
