Terre des Chardons
Terre des Chardons vineyards consists of 4.3ha of Syrah bolstered by 2.1ha of Grenache Noir. All plots lie in the immediate environs of the farmhouse, on soils of siliceous, sedimentary rock (locally known as 'gress') deposited many years previously by the Rhône River. These rocky, pebbley soils are heated by the sun throughout the day and reflect their warmth on to the vines during the nights, assisting ripening. The character of the soils ensures excellent drainage and allows access to a deep water table, offering vines much needed respite from summer drought, which is not uncommon. The Mistral wind blows often, ensuring excellent canopy ventilation and dramatically reducing the risk of vine diseases. Grapes are farmed organically (Ecocert certified) and bio-dynamic farming principles are practiced, in accordance with the lunar calendar. Grapes are harvested entirely by hand and pressed using a hydraulic press, ensuring gentle and controlled extraction. Plots are vinified separately, allowing rigorous selection of individual wines for each blend. Vinification is traditional and carried out under controlled temperatures using yeasts indigenous to the region.
