Château Giscours
This 3ème Cru Classé estate boasts 102 hectares of vineyards planted to 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot.Since 2000, under the stewardship of Managing Director, Alexander Van Beek over 130,000 new vines have been planted to rejuvenate parcels that were missing almost 50% of their vines. A much-needed switch from machine to manual harvesting has increased the quality of the fruit that arrives at the winery at harvest. Soils are typical for Margaux; well-draining, deep gravel with some deposits of limestone which all help to produce smaller berries with higher juice to skin ratios and offering lower yields for a more concentrated flavour. Today more than 20% of the vineyards are farmed biodynamically and there are plans to increase this gradually in the next few years. Château Giscours was one of the first estates to use gravity in the winery and still uses this method today. Vinification occurs in stainless steel and concrete vats with 20% of malolactic fermentation happening in barrel. Aged in 50% new French oak for an average of 18 months, Château Giscours produces wonderful rich aromatic wines with a great deal of power, and flavours of dark cherry, blackcurrant and complex layers of oaky, spicy notes.
