De Trafford Winery
De Trafford is a small South African family-owned winery located at the top of a dramatic valley above Stellenbosch, 380m up between the Stellenbosch and Helderberg mountains, at the end of the Blaauwklip road, between Stellenbosch and Somerset West. It was founded in 1992 by architect David Trafford and his artist wife Rita with the goal of producing high-end wines of great intensity and longevity with minimal intervention.
The winery's goal is to produce wines that fully express the personality and uniqueness of the mountain site's microclimates.
In addition to grapes grown on Mont Fleur, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Chenin Blanc grapes are sourced from three vineyards in the Helderberg and Stellenbosch Mountain areas, resulting in grapes with highly concentrated, balanced flavours from naturally low-yielding vines. Rows of vines are carefully selected from various vineyard blocks and monitored throughout the growing season to ensure the highest quality fruit possible. De Trafford is able to pay attention to every detail because of the limited production of 3500 cases.
De Trafford is run by its founders, David Trafford, who is also the winery's winemaker and his wife Rita. They take a "mindful approach" and pour their hearts and souls into each and every bottle.
