Château La Brie
This Château, lying in the heart of the Bergerac region to the immediate south-west of Bordeaux, produces outstanding quality white wines both from the appellations of Bergerac with their dry Sauvignon Blanc, and from nearby Monbazillac, in the shape of the traditional dessert wine of the appellation. The dry, or 'sec' Sauvignon is harvested early in the autumn, and cool-fermented to retain the characteristic fresh flavours and refreshing, linear acidity for which the grape is known. For the same reasons, the wine is fermented and aged in stainless steel and receives no oak, preferring instead to show off the fresh, vivacious Sauvignon notes. The estate's sweet wine is made in the tradtitional way of Monbazillac, with Semillon and Sauvignon grapes allowed a long hang-time well into the autumn, achieving a high degree of ripeness and allowing the onset of pourriture noble or 'noble rot', responsible for the trademark style of the sweet wines of Monbazillac and neighbouring Sauternes.
