The most popular variety in Friuli, Friulano is also the region’s best quality grape thanks the ambition and efforts of local producers that have led to its realising its true potential. The grape was known as Tocai friulano but in 2006 the European Union ruled that Friuli Tocai wines should be identified simply as Friulano which means coming from Friuli to avoid any confusion with the Tokaji Hungarian sweet wine.
