Douro Valley
Douro DOC is a Portuguese wine region that is situated around the Douro River in the Tráa-os-Montes e Alto Douro region. It is often referred to as the Alto Douro (upper Douro), as it is located some distance upstream from Porto, sheltered from the Altantic wines by the Marão and Montemuro Mountains. It has scorchingly hot, dry summers and equally cold winters. The region has Portugal’s highest wine classification as a Denominação de Origem Controlada (DOC). Even though the region is primarily associated with the production of Port wine, the Douro produces just as much table wine, much of extremely high and impressive quality. Table wines from the Douro are an eclectic mix, ranging from delicious Bordeaux style wines to more smooth and elegant Burgundy-esque examples.
