Languedoc - Roussillon
The Languedoc is France's best value, most diverse and largest wine-producing region (by volume). It takes its name from a time when its inhabitants spoke Occitan, in which 'oc' is the word for 'yes', hence 'langue d'oc'.The region is made up of three different departements - the Aude, Herault and Gard respectively. Despite the large volumes produced, the region is responsible for only 10% of France's AC wines - these appellations include Corbieres, Fitou, Minervois and Coteaux de Languedoc AC. Several different varieties for both red and white are permitted, but the most important grapes include Carignan and Grenache for reds and many local varieties for whites.
