Château Pierre Bise
Situated in the heart of the Anjou appellation, Château Pierre-Bise has gone from an original 9ha estate in 1959 to 50ha of prime vineyard plots in Anjou, Savennieres, Coteaux du Layon and Quarts de Chaume. Today it is considered to be one of the leading producers in Anjou and the Loire Valley. A theory of ‘non-action’ is practised, delegating the care of the land as much as possible to nature; no fertilisers are used, humus is widely applied to encourage micro-organisms and aeration of soils and there is a strong focus on the role of biodiversity in the vineyard. Sheep are used to mow the grass between rows, and hens are used to control the snail population, with the added benefit of providing natural manure to the soils. The approach to winemaking is simple: to intervene as little as possible using natural fermentation with indigenous yeasts. The estate is currently in organic conversion and will be certified from the 2019 vintage onwards.
