Pfalz
The Pfalz is an important region in western Germany's Rhineland which follows the eastern edge of the Haardt mountains (an extension of the Vosges mountains of the Alsace). While cool climate, the region is relatively dry and sunny as a result of the mountains to the west and produces mostly white wine, with a little red and sparkling. Of this production, the overwhelming majority is of Riesling, the grape variety upon which the region's reputation is built. High levels of minerality in the soils, the cool climate and the traditional wine-making approach combine to produce Riesling that is world renowned. The small quantity of red wine that is produced is made from the local take on Pinot Noir known as Spatburgunder.
