Tasting Notes
Spier Savanha Merlot 2021. Nestled in the warm yet breezy valleys of the Western Cape, the vines that produce the 2021 Savanha Merlot thrive on a patchwork of decomposed granite and weathered sandstone soils, some lying within 50 miles of the cool Atlantic coast. These terroir elements grant the wine a vibrant tension between ripeness and refreshing acidity. On the nose, expect aromas of plum, raspberry, and cherry. The palate continues the wine with a smooth core of red berries, framed by a gentle hint of spice, such as clove warmth, balanced by subtle whispers of slate and mineral derived from the soil's stony underlay. A lifted acidity lends briskness and balance, while a subtle oak embrace offers a delicate spiciness and texture. The finish is clean and inviting, leaving behind notes of ripe fruit and understated minerality.
