What is organic and biodynamic wine?
What is organic wine?
While some of the finer details differ from country to country, the overriding theme remains the same; A winery is monitored closely over a few years to make sure the vineyard follows the organic certification rules. Growing organic means taking a "whole system" approach, allowing nature to take control of the natural ecological processes without external input. Drastically reducing the use of chemicals, pesticides and herbicides to only instances where there is no other choice.
This means:
- Better for the planet
- Better for soils
- Better for wildlife
What is biodynamic wine?
Biodynamic wine producers go a step beyond conventional organic farming. In this approach the vineyard is a holistic ecosystem, each plot is connected and the careful farming methods are applied to not only the vines but take into account health of the soils, plants and insects.
Just like with organic wine, biodynamic farmers must only rely on natural materials to grow grapes, often with help from farm animals to fertilize the soil. The idea is that by promoting a completely natural and healthy ecosystem the grapes can flourish to their fullest potential and sustain themselves without the use of ‘medicine’. Biodynamic farming also seeks sustainability and to leave the land in as good or better shape as it was found in.
When it comes to planting, harvesting, and watering the vines, winemakers follow the lunar calendar and a biodynamics calendar. It might sound a bit farfetched but people have been using the moon to farm through the ages!
Biodynamic wines must be certified with either ‘Demeter International’ or ‘Biodyvin’. With these stricter measures in place, the goal is to embrace nature and create quality wines that are a true representation of the healthy terroir they have grown in.
