Château de Pommard - Burgundy's Return To Nature

Working in harmony with nature

Château de Pommard is located in the heart of Burgundy and produces some of the most renowned and sought-after wines. Burgundy is famous for producing some of the best expressions of Pinot noir and Chardonnay, of which both varietals grow exceptionally due to its cool climate.

Within Burgundy there are 1247 climats, these are distinct areas of vine groupings within a vineyard, each plot of land has its own defined personality and unique characteristics. Each has a different soil composition and can vary dramatically from one plot to another. Another key term relating Burgundy are the famous close - walled vineyards protected by a stone wall, historically belonging to Cistercian monasteries.

Château de Pommard is home to more than 25 cuvees and by far the largest monopole in Burgundy. Their Clos Marey-Monge is the largest privately-owned clos in Burgundy at a colossal 20 HAs. It is a collection of seven different climats – Simone, Les Paules, Grands Champs, Chantrerie, 75 Rangs, Micault, and Émilie, each one with their own micro-climate and soil type.

Using 300 years of savoir-faire Château de Pommard have mastered the ability to accentuate the flavours and character from the grapes resulting in dynamic, complex terroir-driven wines.

Biodynamic conversion

Putting nature first, Château de Pommard is taking a hands-off approach and as CEO Michael Baum says letting the vine do all the talking. Sustainability is a key value for Château de Pommard and their strong belief in intervening as little as possible has meant that as each season passes the land becomes increasingly diverse and alive with wildlife, producing a soil that’s full of life and excitement. The rich soil has created a personal connection between the land and each vintage, becoming a genuine expression of the terroir.

In 2015 the estate was granted with a UNESCO world heritage status as well as a more recent organic certification by the INAO (National Institute of Origin and Quality) in 2019. In a strive for healthier grapes to create better-tasting wines, after 300 years of expertise, the estate has begun to change its course to a groundbreaking biodynamic conversion.

"

We do not own our land, we just borrow it from our kids. It is our responsibility to give it back to them in a flawless condition, so that it can keep on producing for the next generations, with all its energies, its balances and nursing abilities. If we do not take care of our land, our descendants will not be able to use it.  - Emmanuel Sala, Head Winemaker

What makes Clos Marey-Monge so special?

The delicacy and intensity of Pinot Noir strongly depends on the quality of the internal surface of clay contained in the soil. The higher the density, the more a vineyard can produce grand cuvées.

The Clos Marey-Monge Monopole takes its personality from all seven distinct climats in Clos Marey-Monge benefitting from soils rich in history made by the Avant-Dheune river thousand years ago.

What makes this wine so unique is that it also includes 10% of the rare Simone - a tiny 0.53 HA climat that embodies the soul of Château and was the first plot to undergo biodynamic changes.

In 2009, Claude et Lydia Bourguignon, both agronomists and founders of the Microbiological Laboratory for Soils, conducted a thorough study on the Clos Marey-Monge and the Simone plot. What they found exceeded every expectation. With an internal surface of clay beyond 730 square meters per gram, Simone is close to the world record.

Clos Marey-Monge Monopole 2017 and a few other delicious wines from the Château are now available for order. Contact our team for more information on these new wines.
