Vins Rijckaert
Jean Rijckaert started his career in Burgundy, founding the Verget negociant with the famous winemaker Jean-Marie Guffens. His passion for the Chardonnay grape drove him to purchase his first vines in Vire-Clesse in 1998 and then to add vineyards in Jura to his domain soon afterwards. Indeed, he can lay claim to being the first winemaker to vinify wines in both the Maconnais and Jura. Today, the estate is owned and run by Jean’s protegé, Florent Rouve, who took over when Jean retired in 2013. Florent continues to work with great respect for Jean’s methods; restricted yields, manual harvests, slow & moderate pressing, only indigenous yeasts and long-ageing. Everything is done with as little intervention as possible and with a greater focus on sustainability; barrels are steam cleaned to limit water consumption, and soils are ploughed or grassed in order to prevent erosion and promote rooting, soil aeration and biodiversity. While remaining true to Jean Rijckaert’s original philosophy, Florent has gradually evolved a style of his own, producing serious wines with great freshness and precision that highlight each grape variety and their terroir.
