For more than 150 years, Alfred Gratien is a familial House and continues the know-how of its founder Alfred Gratien In 1864, he builds at the same year the Gratien & Meyer House in Saumur and Alfred Gratien in Epernay. Grapes are purchased from about a hundred winegrowers with whom Alfred Gratien has worked for many years. These sound relations, based on mutual trust and respect, are crucial advantages to ensure high quality of the supplied grapes. Only the noble juice becomes Champagne at Alfred Gratien House. 62% of our wines sourcing are Premiers and Grands Crus (Avize, Mesnil, Bouzy and Reuil) and they only keep the first press. Alfred Gratien is one of the last remaining Champagne House that carries out the entire vinification process using wood. Annually producing around 300,000 bottles of hand crafted champagne, this small winery in comparison to many others was voted the 18th most admired Champagne houses by the on trade.Sustainable wine making is practised at the winery through number of different methods. Unlike many other vineyards, here they use steam to clean barrels instead of filling them up with water a process that means they only 5% of the water they would usually use. They are using less energy by incorporating natural cooling methods in the wine making process.
